Candidates for Professional Teeth Whitening
Professional teeth whitening is a low-risk cosmetic treatment that is suitable for most adults and may be suitable for teens, with their parents’ permission. Teeth whitening can whiten teeth that are mildly to moderately discolored. Although Zoom!® offers teeth whitening formulas for patients with sensitive teeth, this procedure may not be appropriate for everyone. If you have sensitive teeth, you can discuss your options in detail with Dr. Couvelis during your consultation.
Patients with discolored restorations will likely need to have them replaced, as restoration materials do not typically respond to whitening treatments. Professional teeth whitening may not remove internal stains, which may require additional cosmetic treatment such as dental bonding or porcelain veneers.
Teeth Whitening Procedure
Consultation
Prior to your teeth whitening treatment, Dr. Couvelis will examine your teeth and gums and discuss your treatment goals during your consultation. Together, you will determine whether you will benefit most from in-office or take-home teeth whitening or a combination of the two. If you choose take-home treatment, we will take impressions of your teeth to create custom whitening trays.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
When you come in for in-office whitening treatment, your teeth and gums will first be cleaned to remove any particles of food and bacteria. Dr. Couvelis will then place a protective barrier over the gums and will coat the surfaces of your teeth with a whitening agent. The whitening agent will remain on your teeth for a specified amount of time, illuminated by a chairside light to expedite the brightening process.
Bleaching gel may be removed and reapplied more than once to achieve your desired results. With the Zoom!® in-office whitening system, your teeth may lighten by up to eight shades after just one visit. You may require periodic maintenance treatments for lasting results.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening
When your custom whitening trays are ready, you can return to our office to pick them up. Dr. Couvelis will ensure that they fit properly and will provide you with instructions on how to properly use your take-home kit.
At home, you will place the whitening gel in the trays using a syringe and then place the trays over your teeth. The trays should fit snugly so that the gel does not come into contact with the gums. Depending on your treatment goals, trays may be worn daily for 15 minutes to one hour, or nightly for about two weeks. You may require periodic maintenance treatments for lasting results.
