The Many Benefits of Tooth-colored Fillings

The line separating cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry has become so blurred in recent years that it’s sometimes difficult to remember that there was once a time when patients were often forced to choose between aesthetics and durability. Take, for example, the case of tooth-colored fillings. Thirty years ago, tooth-colored fillings were an option; however, most dentists recommended metal amalgam fillings because they were stronger and they lasted longer, making them a much better investment. Most patients agreed.

Fast forward to 2016, and at practices such as North Pier Dental Associates, every restorative dentistry treatment we offer has a cosmetic component to it. The purpose of every restorative treatment plan is to produce a smile as aesthetically appealing as it is functional and healthy. Modern tooth-colored fillings are now every bit as strong and durable as their metal counterparts, which helps us to accomplish this. The benefits of tooth-colored fillings don’t end there, however. Dr. William J. Couvelis discusses tooth-colored filling benefits in detail during consultations at his Chicago, IL cosmetic dentistry practice so that patients understand precisely why he opts for these over the silver amalgam fillings of the past.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings offer many benefits compared to metal fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are:

Strong and durable: At North Pier Dental Associates, we use the finest materials in all of our dental restorations, including our tooth-colored fillings. The composite resin material we use in our tooth-colored fillings withstand the pressures of biting and chewing just as well as their silver amalgam counterparts and should last every bit as long - if not longer.

More stable when exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures: When silver amalgam and other metal fillings are exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, they expand and contract. This can cause them to fracture or even become dislodged. While tooth-colored fillings will also expand and contract when exposed to extreme hot and cold, they do so to lesser degrees and are therefore much less likely to fracture or become dislodged.

Free from mercury: The composite resin used in tooth-colored fillings is completely mercury free. Although the trace amounts of mercury found in silver amalgam fillings has never been proven to be harmful to patients’ health, why would you voluntarily put a toxin in your mouth when you can avoid it altogether?

Natural looking and aesthetically pleasing: Tooth-colored fillings blend naturally and seamlessly into virtually any smile. Patients emerge from treatment with their smiles intact, without the conspicuous gleam of metal emanating from their treated teeth.
